If your GA driver's license, permit, or ID has been lost or stolen, you need to replace it with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) right away.
It's illegal to drive without a permit or license, and a lost or stolen photo ID can end up in the wrong hands and compromise your identity.
Report Your Lost or Stolen GA Driver's License, Permit, or ID
If your Georgia driver's license, permit, or ID has been lost or stolen, it's important to report it to your local police department right away, especially if you know that it has been stolen.
The GA DDS allows you to get a replacement license or ID by bringing in a copy of your police report; it must state that your driver's license or ID card was compromised or stolen.
You may apply for a new driver's license or ID card number IF you present a police report that clearly states that your license or ID card was stolen.
Check out our page on identity theft for more information on protecting yourself.
Apply for a Replacement GA Driver's License
The GA DDS lets residents of the state apply for a duplicate driver's license, ID, or permit either in person or online. Note that certain eligibility requirements apply to use of the online system.
Also note that the GA DDS implemented Secure DL/ID requirements in July 2012 and strongly encourages those replacing a driver's license or ID card to upgrade to a secure ID, as you will be required to upgrade at your next ID renewal. You can only do so in person.
Requirements are outlined below in “Apply In Person.'

Apply In Person
To replace your lost or stolen driver's license, instruction permit, or ID card in person, go to your local DDS Customer Service Center with:
- Payment for the applicable fee (see “Replacement Fees' below).
- You can pay via cash, check/money order, MasterCard or Visa debit and credit cards.

- 1 document from Category A (e.g, birth certificate [original or certified copy only], valid U.S. passport, etc.).
Secure ID Requirements
The GA DDS now offers Secure IDs to provide enhanced protection against identity theft and increase the integrity of your license or ID. If you are replacing an unexpired license or ID that is not a Secure ID, you have the choice to upgrade or wait until time of renewal.
If you are upgrading to a Secure DL/ID, you must bring the following documents with you when applying for your replacement.
- 1 document for primary identity.
- 1 document for Social Security number.
- 2 documents for residency.
- If your name has changed, you must provide proof of your legal name change (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc.).

Non-U.S. Citizens
If you are not a citizen of the United States and need to get a duplicate driver's license, then your only option is to do so in person at your local DDS office. Be prepared to bring payment and original documents to prove your identity and your lawful presence in the U.S.:
- Proof of identity. Examples include:

- 8-year ID: $32.
Out-of-State GA Driver's License Replacement
If your driver's license is lost, stolen, or damaged while you are temporarily out of state, you don't have many options. You must apply for a replacement in person or online (see above). You can only apply online if you know your driver's license number, and the GA DDS will not send replacement driver's licenses to out-of-state addresses.
However, you may be able to renew by mail up to 150 days prior to the expiration date or if the card is not expired more than 2 years. Check out our page on renewing your license in GA for more information.
Call DDS customer service at (678) 413-8500 to see what your options are if you need a duplicate license before returning to the state.
New-to-State Drivers
If you are new to GA and your out-of-state license, permit, or ID card has been lost or stolen, the DDS requires that you present either a certified copy of your driving record or motor vehicle report (MVR) from your previous state.
If you are presenting an MVR, the date must be within the last 30 days. You may request that a fax be sent directly to the DDS from another state agency; however, you may not use an uncertified copy printed from the web.

Though getting your license is an exciting accomplishment, taking your behind-the-wheel exam can be an intimidating hurdle.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to prepare for the exam and there are also mistakes you should avoid when it comes to taking your Georgia driving test. Here are some of the pitfalls you'll want to sidestep on the rod to getting your license:
1. Practicing Incorrectly
In Georgia, most teen drivers are required to complete at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel practice before getting their license. Though practicing is crucial when it comes to passing your Georgia driving test, remember that not all practice is created equal.
Though plenty of adult motorists develop bad driving habits, you'll need to do things the right way if you want to pass your exam. While practicing, make sure to always drive under the speed limit, come to a complete stop at stop signs and use your turn signals. Practicing the correct behaviors behind the wheel will ensure that they come naturally during your Georgia driving test.
2. Not Studying the DDS Driver Manual
While your Georgia driving test will focus on your practical skills, your examiner will also be watching to make sure you understand the state's highway signs and traffic laws. It's a good idea to brush up on these using the DDS Driver Manual before your exam.
It even includes a section on the Georgia driving test that outlines all the skills you'll be asked to demonstrate.
3. Not Bringing All the Correct Paperwork
This may sound obvious, but when you visit the DDS to take your Georgia driving test, be sure that you've got all the necessary paperwork. It's not uncommon for applicants to be turned away because of missing documents. You'll need:
- The insurance card and registration for the vehicle you'll be driving during the exam
- Documents verifying your identity, address, social security number and legal status UNLESS you have a gold star in the top-right corner of your Georgia learner's permit indicating that you have secure status
- Proof that you've completed any required driver education courses (these vary by age)
- A notarized certificate of school enrollment if you're under 18
4. Not Learning the Necessary Maneuvers
The DDS wants drivers to pass the Georgia driving test. That's why it outlines all the skills you'll need to ace the exam right on its website. Before you take the test, make sure you feel comfortable:
- Parallel parking
- Backing up in a straight line
- Stopping at stop signs and traffic signals
- Turning your car in a narrow space
- Approaching intersections and yielding to right-of-way
- Turning, passing and following
- Using your mirrors, turn signals and driving with the correct posture
5. Getting Too Nervous
This mistake may sound like the toughest of all to avoid, but do your best to relax on the day of your Georgia driving test. If you've steered clear of the other pitfalls on this list, you'll be well prepared to impress your examiner and drive away with your license.
